Nolan must rob every store in a mall in one night – or his girlfriend dies. Two Nolan novels from Grandmaster Max Allan Collins, collected in one volume for the first time.
Nolan and Jon have put their lives of crime behind them – but when a cruel adversary from their past resurfaces, they’re forced back into the heist game with a brutal ultimatum: pull off an insanely ambitious overnight robbery or Nolan’s kidnapped lover won’t live to see the morning.

Appearing in bookstores for the first time in 35 years, this is Nolan’s biggest and deadliest job – and Mad Money also features, for the first time ever in the same volume, the bonus full-length novel Mourn the Living, offering a look back at Nolan’s early years as a professional thief.

Hard Case Crime completes its cycle of Collins' novels about not-quite-reformed thief Nolan with his first appearance and one of his last. In Spree, the later, longer, and more polished of the pair, Nolan's live-in lover, Sherry, is kidnapped to pressure him into masterminding a grandly scaled robbery of the most tempting targets among the 50 stores in Missouri's Brady Eighty mall. Coleman Comfort, the paterfamilias behind the scheme, already has a grudge against Nolan for killing his brother Sam and Sam's two sons in an earlier plot that went violently off the rails, and it seems obvious that as soon as the heist is history, he plans to kill Sherry and Nolan anyway. In fact, his homicidal plans are even more extensive than that, though not if Nolan and his frequent accomplice Jon Ross have anything to say about it. Mourn the Living, the first story Collins wrote about Nolan, though not the first he published, is an informal homage to Richard Stark's adventures of one-named criminal Parker. Owing a big favor to mobbed-up pencil pusher Sid Tisor, Nolan reluctantly agrees to look into the death of Tisor's daughter, Irene, a Chelsey University student who fell 10 stories to her death, even though it's going to bring him uncomfortably close to Chicago's Franco crime family, who've already put a $250,000 bounty on his head for his past misdeeds against them. Was Irene high on LSD? Was she actually pushed? What details have been covered up by Chelsey cop Phil Saunders, who's the cousin of incompetent gang boss George Franco's financial secretary Irwin Elliot, the real power behind Chelsey's thriving drug industry? Hard-case crimes with the bonus of a few surprising zingers.

This twofer is the final volume in Hard Case's project to republish all of Collins' longunavailable Nolan novels. This one brings together Spree and Mourn the Living--an interesting pairing since the former, originally published in 1987, was intended to be the last Nolan novel, and the latter, written in 1967 or '68, was Nolan's debut (it wasn't published first, however, but that's another story). Mourn the Living is a bit of a curiosity: written during Collins' undergraduate years, it shows its author's youth but is still of interest to Nolan fans eager to see a bit of the hero's coming-of-age. Spree, on the other hand, is a jewel from start to finish. Nolan and sidekick Jon are shanghaied into doing a job they want no part of: robbing an entire shopping mall (think Ocean's 11 with Benetton sweaters). Collins displays his formidable plotting chops here, layering one delicious detail after another into the planning and execution of the audacious caper, not to mention the double and triple crosses taking place in the process as Nolan tries to outwit his nefarious accomplices.
